How to use Mixi

Find n Add Friends to Your Mixi Page

Whether you’re studying Japanese, into anime & j-pop or just love Japan, Mixi is your best chance of finding Japanese friends who are into the same things as you. With over 10 million users, it is the biggest hangout for Japanese people online.

Let’s look at how to add friends to your “My Friends” list in Mixi. Adding a friend to your list of friends enables them to keep up to date on your latest posts and always be just one click away from getting in touch with you. When you add a friend to your list, you are also automagically added to their friends list. This means that you will also be updated when they write a new post. It is also a nice way for both of you to be connected with friends of your friend, as their friends will start to notice your name around Mixi and may ask to become your friend too.

Here’s how to find and add friends (kind of a two-parter tutorial!), enjoy:

Start by clicking on the “search” button at the top of your screen, it’s the one with the magnifying glass icon.

Use this English Mixi screen to see where the button is in English.

Now, you are at the user search screen where you can search for users by age, name, nickname, gender, hobby, location, shoe size, etc… err, actually, I don’t think you can search by shoe size, but you get the idea ;) Here is that screen in both English and Japanese:

Find ‘n’ add friends to your Mixi page

For most of these drop-down lists, you can find the English translations in this site in earlier tutorials. For other menus, either e-mail me for help and I’ll be adding them to this site very soon.

Here are the results for a search I did on people who live or have an interest in Australia. I did this simply be typing “Australia” on the above screen and hitting the “search” button.

I think I’ll try and make friends with the 3rd user down, “higeoyaij” or “bearded old dude” I think it translates to…. :D

I click on his photo or the “show details” button to go to his Mixi profile page. See where to click in the following pictures, both English and Japanese:

Above his photo on his profile page and below the blue menu on the same page, there is one line of text with a clickable link at the end in blue underlined text. This is the magic button and pressing this will take you one step further to becoming friends with this Mixi user and that’s what this tutorial is all about :D So, go ahead and click that blue text. These Japanese and English screens highlight exactly where you should click:

Otsukare (good job!), we’re almost there… If you need some refreshment, try these cool Japanese drinks & snacks.

Now, you should be looking at the “Add to My Friends” screen:

In the message section provided, please type a message for your new friend and when you’re ready, click the brown “confirm” at the bottom. This will take you here:

Add friend confirmation screen

“Send the message below?” – is the title of the next screen you are presented with. It’s just another confirmation screen, provided by Mixi so you have a chance to double-check your message before sending. I trust that you have impeccable typing skills, so let’s just go ahead and click the brown “Send” button at the bottom of the screen:

Success! You have sent the request to become Mixi friends

Dekimashita! You did it. Now, a message has been sent to the Mixi member and if they approve you as a new friend, you will be added to their friends list and they to yours.

I hope your new friends are really nice and can help teach you Japanese or talk about latest J-pop, whatever. I’ve made some great friends in Mixi, Japanese and also foreigners in Japan like myself. There are many stories in Japan of people even getting married after meeting in Mixi!!!

Let me know what type of friends you meet in Mixi and share some comments at the bottom of this story for others to read…
